What is San Choy Bow (Asian Lettuce Wraps) ?
San Chow Boy, or simply, Lettuce wraps, are first of all, spelt in a variety of different ways depending on where you are from in the world. Some places it goes by the name “Bau” at the end, or “Sang” in the beginning. But no matter what way you choose to spell it, San Choy Bow, is commonly known as lettuce wraps, which is a really light and easy stir-fry recipe, that consists usually of a type of meat, sauces and vegetables wrapped into a wrap of lettuce.
Ingredients For Vegan Asian Mince Crunchy Lettuce Cups
- Vegan mince
- Lettuce leaves
- Vegetable oil
- Red onion
- Spring onion
- Garlic
- Hoisin sauce
- Vegan oyster sauce
- Mushroom soy sauce
- Shaoxing rice wine
- Sesame oil
- Black pepper
- Sugar or mirin
- Rice wine vinegar
- Red chilli

What toppings can you use for San Choy Bow?
The most known fillings to have in San Choy Bow is either pork or chicken, but for our recipe, we serve this in a vegan-friendly version, and instead use vegan soya mince. You could also use vegan chicken, tempeh, tofu or other vegan meat alternatives, but our best result has been to use soya mince.

Instructions For Vegan Asian Mince Crunchy Lettuce Cups
- Add the hoisin, oyster sauce, mushroom soy, Shaoxing rice wine, sesame oil, black pepper, sugar and rice wine vinegar into a bowl. Mix well and set aside for a few minutes.
- Heat the vegetable oil and add in the red onion. Cook them out until they start to get a little translucent and soft.
- Then add the garlic and half of the spring onions, then cook until the garlic becomes fragrant.
- Now add the vegan mince until lightly browned. Then add that delicious sauce to the pan and incorporate all the ingredients. Cook for a few minutes until the mince looks sticky and soaked up the sauce. Then add the rest of the green onions right at the end.
- Arrange the lettuce onto a plate and spoon the mince onto each leaf. They should become little bowls and hold the mince when picked up. The garnish with some fresh chilli. Fresh coriander and sesame seeds also would be great for garnish.

How To Store Vegan Asian Mince Crunchy Lettuce Leftovers
This dish is best served straight away. But can also use for left-over lunch and will keep fresh in the fridge for a couple of days.

Ingredients
- 250 grams Vegan mince (I used Richmond meat free soya mince)
- 6-8 Lettuce leaves (I used romaine lettuce but you can use any that’s crispy and substantial enough to hold the mince)
- 1 tbsp Vegetable oil
- 1 medium red onion (finely chopped)
- 2 spring onions (finely sliced)
- 3 cloves garlic (crushed or finely chopped)
- 100 ml Hoisin sauce
- 2 tbsp Vegan oyster sauce (optional as if you can’t get it, add a little more hoisin)
- 1 tbsp Mushroom soy sauce
- 2 tsp Shaoxing rice wine
- 1 tsp Sesame oil
- 1 tsp Black pepper
- 1 tsp Sugar or Mirin
- 2 tsp Rice wine vinegar
- 1 red chilli (optional)
